Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Dave Carey is vetoing recent assembly action that affects assembly member term limits.
Carey says that he is reluctant to use veto authority. He says he did so in this case because he feels the process that led to the action did not offer enough time for public scrutiny. An original ordinance asking for changes included needing approval of voters, but after several amendments the voter approval requirement was taken out.
The assembly can override Carey's veto with a two-thirds vote. The ordinance was originally approved on an 8 to 1 vote. Assembly Member Brent Johnson voted no.
